The Dictionary is by far the largest collection of Somali paremias ever published, presenting around 6,000 thoroughly documented proverbs and proverbial phrases and their variants, the majority of which have been received direct from Somali informants. The introduction acquaints the reader with the logico-semiotic theory of G.L. Permakov, which was based on his discovery of the signal nature of proverbs. The full characteristics are given here of all the twelve types of paremias which, according to the observations of G.L. Kapchits, exist in the Somali proverbial stock.
